Okay, so here's the story...

I was at the gym yesterday working out and this group of girls from a local group home comes in. Well, while I was hitting the showers these girls were changing and I guess decided to start going through all the open lockers. Now why these girls were in the locker room unattended I have no idea, I have always thought and from working with a group home myself that if you take the group of them somewhere that you are responsible for supervising them. However, I guess that isnt how the case with said group home in town. Im not saying it is because these kids are "bad kids" but many of them are in the group homes for having been through the system some how. So anyway, two of them decided to go through my things and steal my cell phone along with various other items from my purse. I walked out of the locker room and reported to the attendant working at the time that one of them stole things from me and I wanted the cops called to search everyone in the gym to get my things back. Well, I guess at this point it is now time for the group home directors to leap into action (again, why they werent in the locker room looking after them in the first place so these girls didnt go through the lockers I dont know) and they went in and searched them all and found my things, but wouldnt tell me which ones of them had taken my stuff without me filing a police report. However, they were discouraging me from doing so because I did get my things back. Which in my opinion was not the point, yes I did get my things back but had I not noticed my things were gone before leaving the gym those girls would have gotten away with my things and the things of lord knows who else. My personal opinion is that the whole reason they didnt want me to report it was because they didnt want to get their asses in trouble for not watching these girls in the first place.

Anyway, I called the police to tell them I wanted to file a report because two of these girls attempted to steal my things and you know what the cops said to me...

"Well you got your stuff back didnt you whats the point?"

Um, well excuse me but me getting my stuff back isnt the point. Making these girls responsible for their actions is the point. Filing a report so that these girls cannot hide behind the system is the point. The public needs to be aware that these girls are theives and to be aware that if they are ever allowed into another establishment where they are left unattended that they should be watched at least by the staff of that establishment since obviously the people who are supposed to be watching them dont seem to think it is necessary.

I guess my point is this, just because you have the opportunity to do something doesnt make it right. It is things like this that make the entire community of those who are like you look bad. It is a sad thing to say because I know that not all people who are in group homes are bad. I have worked with many of them in that type of a setting and I know people who come from that setting who are not like this. It is unfortunate that the small few ruin the name of the larger population because they are selfish and have no mrals.

Anyway, thought for the day. Think before you act because yo never know who might be watching you. And if I run into you and you decide that I am a good person to steal from you might want to think twice on that because I am not a push over and I do not stand for "oh they have had a hard life already" as an excuse.

It's sad that many of the youth, especially in that town, have their moral compasses so askew. The group home wasn't doing it's job, both with not supervising them and not teaching them that stealing is wrong. Especially if they were dumb enough to do it in front of you.
